There are all kinds of reasons why one would want to join the healthcare division. First of all, people will always need healthcare, so there is never a worry of not being able to find a job. Second of all, some may find it rewarding to be helping to improve the lives of others suffering from health-related problems. When one talks about health administration, it refers to the management of all kinds of health care systems be it in one hospital, many hospitals or a whole network of hospitals. A health administrator is a reputable job as these caregivers are not only considered as healers, they are also considered as professionals.
Health administrators should not be confused with doctors and nurses who work face-to-face with the patients. Typically, health administrators would be those behind-the-scenes whose role is to ensure that the hospital runs smoothly. Much like any other form of business, hospitals also need to run with positive cash flow and it is the job of these administrators to not only ensure that the company is making profit, but that all of their resources from health workers to surgical equipment are all utilized to their full potential.
A health administrator would probably start off with the title “hospital administrator” before being promoted to department or division director. Provided that he or she performs well, the next upgrade would be the chief financial officer, chief executive officer or company president. Of course, larger hospitals have many more layers of administration.
Although rare, some clinics do hire health administrators as well. Doctors who prefer to maximize their time seeing patients would then delegate all the paperwork and day-to-day decision making to administrators to ensure that the clinic will run uninterrupted. In larger facilities, there could be dozens of administrators at every level of the hierarchy, each concentrating on personnel and nursing activities, quality assurance or finance. As hospitals typically come with a large number of staff, it is up to the health administrationteam to constantly review standard procedures and implement or upgrade the policies to improve work effectiveness.
